Cecilia Suyat Marshall's StoryI'm 88 years old today and I'm still living fine and well, don't worry! I was married to Thurgood Marshall here on this planet for 38 blessed years, and I do know in my heart that I will soon be with him again. Marshall is an incredible husband, father, and activist for Civil Rights. A little bit about me: I was born in Hawaii to Filipino immigrants in 1928 and met Marshall after moving to New York and working at the NAACP. Thurgood was a great man--he was always caring and loving, with a strong sense of right and wrong, a good balance of justice and mercy. He believed in absolute truth and freedom for all people, regardless of race, gender, or any other distinguishing unchangeable features of humankind. Thurgood Marshall has been truly transformative in my years of marriage with him. I have been inspired and sparked to make a difference in the lives of others. He has always been humorous and ready to crack a joke, even in a serious atmosphere--this I have found even before marrying him. I have been exceptionally proud of Thurgood's daring accomplishments, especially his victory in Brown v. Board of Education and his nomination to the position of Solicitor General, and, of course, him being the first African-American Supreme Court Justice. He has served his family, his community, and ultimately his nation well, proudly, and bravely. His example lives on, both to me and to the rest of our society. This project is amazing because we should remember our history not for our generation but for the younger generation . . . to keep reminding them and telling them the history of where we came from . . . it was not very easy. God bless you all and God bless the United States of America.
