"The measure of a country’s greatness is its ability to retain compassion in times of crisis." -- Thurgood Marshall
Our Mission |
The mission of the †he ℳarshall Legacy is to "Inspire to Aspire." We believe that Thurgood Marshall was a truly impactful individual who helped to create a more free and fair America. He stood up for the helpless, the persecuted, and the oppressed, and yet he never succumbed, like many of his fellow fighters had at the time, to violence and anarchy. In his own words, "Neither race nor color nor frustration is an excuse for either lawlessness or anarchy." Our efforts in the †he ℳarshall Legacy are aimed to accomplish Marshall's vision of American freedom without barbaric unrest. We believe that is what Marshall and MLK Jr both intended, and we believe that is what Americans should do--to "protest against injustice" with restraint and cool heads.
We are not affiliated with any particular political party or lobbying group; we fight only in the hearts and minds of the people in our society and culture--not in the courts nor in senate chambers. |
Our History |
Founded in 2007, more than a decade after Marshall's death, †he ℳarshall Legacy was actually a subsidiary of a parent organization, known as Projec†hurgood, which was established in 1995, but which splintered off due to a clash in vision and goals. Projec†hurgood was an African-American advocacy group, similar in motive to the NAACP, and was instrumental in the naming of the BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport in 2005 (Their website is projecthurgood.weebly.com). †he ℳarshall Legacy, however, is distinct in its very specific, inclusive, and focused mission of commemorating Marshall's life and legacy, while at the same time instilling Marshall's values into the young generation through the use of short, inspirational stories.
